Qornat es-Sawda is the highest mountain in Lebanon. We climbed it in 1967, an easy, dry and dusty climb from the Cedars of Lebanon, now just a small wood, rather a sad remnant of their former glory as commemorated by the psalmist.
The hills are rolling rather than dramatic. In winter they are covered in snow and the area is a ski resort.
As Lebanon sunk into civil war I treasured this ascent as the 'penny black' of my mountain collection.
Now that the country is once again welcoming tourists this acquisition may well lose its rarity value.
