Home directory structure

I’ve been using this directory scheme for over a decade and it works well for me:

Mail/   Notes  doc/   own/  prj/  tmp/  work/
Music/  bin/   mess/  phd/  src/  uni/  www/

I keep nothing else in my home directory, except for dotfiles.

In detail:

Mail: Top folder of a Maildir hierarchy.
Music: Top folder of music collection (I use Artist/Album (Year) below this).
bin: Scripts, this directory is in $PATH.
doc: E-books and other documentation
mess: Top folder of a mess collection.
own: Private stuff that fits nowhere else.
phd: Top folder of PhD stuff.
prj: Top folder for projects.
src: Top folder for external source repositories.
tmp: Temporary storage.
uni: Top folder of university stuff (ordered by semester).
work: Top folder of work projects.
www: Top folder of websites (one directory for each domain).
Notes: Text file with the current notes.
